.......Who we are...

"To enable the local communities to help themselves" became our motto, bringing innovative ideas, focusing on health and education, but always making sure that they could be implemented on a local 'Nepali Style' level.

In 1995 Douglas Maclagan, fDouglas with Asha Familyounder and Operations Director of Child Welfare Scheme (CWS) came to Nepal with a plan: to set up two Day-Care Health Centres in remote mountain villages. He then set off to sell this idea, our 'Scheme', in Hong Kong and London, and found the necessary funds to achieve his aims: to address the unnecessary suffering of children in Nepal.
"To enable the local communities to help themselves" became our motto, bring in innovative ideas, focusing on education and health, but always making sure that they could be implemented on a local, 'Nepali style' level.

In 1997 CWS was officially established under English law, and in 2000 a five-year agreement was signed with Nepal Government, providing an outline of our project goals and time frames.

The London & Hong Kong (CWS) offices raise funds and awareness for Child Welfare Scheme Nepal (CWSN), an NGO set up under Nepalese law. CWSN, the local implementing body, is monitored by representatives of CWS.

Since 1997 we have grown substantially. We have implemented water and stove projects, built 13 Day-Care Health Centres, established the Asha Health services, which includes a specialised primary health centre services for children called Asha Clinic, Mobile Clinics in our ambulances that reach out to many of the slum areas in and around Pokhara, a Safer Motherhood Program; and set up the JYOTI Vocational Training Centre and JYOTI Street Project providing children with a necessary protection to their child rights. Our base is an office in Pokhara, Western Nepal from where all operations are co-ordinated.

Over many years, staff and volunteers have come and gone; supporters and donors have visited the projects, all of them making it possible for us to achieve what we have. Without all of you there simply would not be a Child Welfare Scheme-thank you, so very much .
