About Nepal

Nepal has over 125 languages, dozens of ethnic groups and a wondrously rich and compatible religious way of life. CWS works to uphold these traditions and to encourage particularly younger people to enjoy their cultures.

Community programs
CWS believes that a strong community spirit is vital to the success of any project. We try to involve mother's groups, locally elected bodies and importantly the youth of the areas where we work in many different programs. These programs are a chance to bring people closer together, strengthening and building the community spirit - that is perhaps our real partner in Nepal!
CWSN & The Body Shop Hong Kong "Youth-for-Youth"
The first tournament was held in May 1998 and the village chosen for this yearly event was Bhachok, of the Bhachok VDC (Village Development Committee) Kaski district Nepal, where The Body Shop Hong Kong built a Day-Care/ Health Centre in 1997. The reason the CWSN organized such an event, was to give the youths of the CWS/N working area, a festival once a year, to unite the youth clubs of this vast area (some of whom have to walk for 6 to 7 hours to reach Bhachok village).

After the first tournament was held, many friendships were made, and the youth clubs now organize their own small tournaments between different villages. The culture dance competition that is also held each year along with the volleyball tournament, has stimulated the youths of the CWSN area to uphold their culture, and form dance groups that now travel to neighbouring villages to perform at village fetes, and raise money for the upkeep of their youth clubs.

Some of these dance groups now donate money to the government schools and CWSN Day-Care/Health Centres. These dance activities all help to show that western fashion and Indian film songs, (now so popular amongst Nepali youth) can be given a good run for their money by village mountain song and dance numbers, performed in traditional dress.
