Faced with the many hardships of life in rural Nepal, CWS/N set up simple yet highly effective facilities together with villagers to improve their lives, and especially those of their children. Through the efficient use of funds, Child Welfare Scheme empowers and enables its local partners to work with communities to reduce poverty and improve the health, education and opportunities To date CWS has helped 11 mountain village communities build and manage their own Day-Care Health Centres. CWS has also set up drinking water projects and established programmes to build smokeless stoves in many village houses. In addition, CWS undertakes activities for street youth in Pokhara, including a health clinic and a vocational training and reintegration centre.
CWS regularly publishes newsletters, annual reports, and research reports. These documents are shared with a large number of organizations at local, national and international levels. Only about 14% of the Nepali population lives in urban areas, but the numbers are increasing. Villagers migrate with their families to the cities, hoping for a better life, some attracted by the urban wealth, others fleeing from the on-going violence resulting from the Maoist insurgency. Many of them find their dreams shattered and end up in slum areas adjacent to urban centres. Before the Maoist insurgency it was estimated that there were about 5,000 street children throughout Nepal, increasing by about 1,000 every year.
