2. Training Methodology

a) Lecture/Discussion
During the training, the participants will be assessed on their level of knowledge and skill for construction and maintenance of ICS through discussion and tests. As per the feedback form, discussion and tests, the lecture session will be modified and focus on the aspect in which they most lack confidence. The theoretical part of the training will be facilitated in a participatory manner.

b) Practical Classes
The training will be focused on hands-on practices. The participants will construct different models of ICS during the training after the construction process has been demonstrated by a resource person. During the session, the repair and maintenance techniques will also be discussed.

Participants doing practical on training session

The trainees will be divided into groups and they would be given the job to make one, two or three pothole ICS as well as a raised ICS. Firstly, they will learn briefly to knead soil, make brick and different models of ICS as demonstrated by the trainer. The evaluation of the trainees' performance will also be jointly (participants and trainer) done by critically analyzing the ICS made at the training site.

c) Group work and Presentation
Some interesting topics shall be put forward to the participants for group discussion in order to understand their views and ideas on ICS. This method shall make the training more participatory and encourages the participants to judge the important features of using the improved cooking stoves.

One member of each group will be requested to make a small presentation on a certain important issue related to ICS.

d) Field Visit/Observation visit
The purpose of the observation visit by the trainee to the place of use is to know the various problems that may arise in the practical use of ICS. After the visit, discussions will be made on the observed facts and the possible solutions of any problems arising. The participants shall have to make the following observations:

  • Observation of the current models
  • Observation of the ICS that were installed at the site.
  • Observation of the chimney, potholes, fire hole and chimney outlets
  • Observation of kitchen management status
  • Observation of the maintenance status
  • Observation of the technical problems that arise
