Day-Care/Healh Centres

There are not enough health care facilities for children under the age of six, the most vulnerable age group in Nepal. These children are normally looked after by elderly family members or their siblings (who often don't provide the best care) while their mothers work in the fields. Accidents can happen, and illnesses often go unnoticed. In an attempt to reduce child mortality, CWS/N has established thirteen Day-Care/Health Centres in remote area's of Kaski and Lamjung districts.

2 to 5 year olds now have a safe environment to learn and play in. This frees parents, especially mothers and older siblings. These centres have been constructed by the villagers themselves, with financial help and expertise offered by CWS/N. Local women are trained up to become early childhood development teachers and community health workers, while a committee (SMC, School Management Committee) of the village heads run the centre. Out of 13 Day care health centres, 11 centres have been handed over to the communities. The community run the centre under their own management and supervision.

Financial independence has been assured through a sustainability fund that has been set up with help from all over the world, and through support from the Rowlands family foundation. The village communities also contrivute to their annual budgets to ensure that the ownership and responsibility stays with them.
