Early Childhood Development

"Every morning, the kids are running to the centres full of excitement at the thought of a day of songs, games and adventures."

The emphasis of education in the DCHC's is learning through play and fun. Theteachers themselves, who all come from the village communities, have to learn this, as these methods of teaching and learning are very different from their own traditional Nepalese education. Initially this was quite hard but thanks to the efforts of many foreign volunteers and " Seto Gurans" a Kathmandu based NGO that promotes Early Childhood Development, they understand these child friendly teaching techniques.

Now the teachers work hard to make the environment safe, playful, interesting and, above all, fun! They don't try to 'teach', but to show that a school can be a great place to go. This in turn subconsciously opens the young child's mind to this new place full of other children they have to learn to relate to, hence developing as individuals while socializing through different activities.

Children sing songs, dance, play games (both fun and educational), listen to stories, take part in creative/art activities, and simple indirect maths games. There is also a strong emphasis on health care in the lessons, showing the children the importance of hygiene and clean appearance.

Every morning, the kids are running to the centres full of excitement at the thought of a day of songs, games and adventures. The children in the DCHCs are split into three groups: Nursery, Lower Kinder- garten and Upper Kindergarten. Currently over 600 children are enrolled in the thirteen centres.
